Supreme Court lifts federal ban on gambling in sports
In a ruling that could bring dramatic lifestyle changes for millions of Americans The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that the federal ban on betting on sports is unlawful.
The 7-to-2 decision of the Court decided in favour the state of New Jersey in its years long fight against the four main sports leagues – MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL all hell-bent on preventing sports gambling from expanding beyond Nevada.
“Just as Congress lacks the power to order a state legislature not to enact a law authorizing sports gambling, it may not order a state legislature to refrain from enacting a law licensing sports gambling,” Judge Sam Alito said in his majority decision.
New Jersey, through a referendum in 2011, and a 2014 law allowed sports betting at racetracks and casinos. The law is now set to be in effect and bets on sports could start accepting bets before the close of the month or prior to the NBA Finals.
Monmouth Park, about 55 miles to the south of Manhattan is planning to launch a sports book in just two weeks and will also offer sports betting via mobile shortly after.
New York is not far further.
Empire State voters in 2013 approved a referendum to allow expansion of casinos, which included the ability for four casinos to be able to offer sports betting.
In the meantime, the New York legislature needs to adopt a law that defines the types of sports betting that are allowed as well as the New York Gaming Commission needs to authorize the four casinos that will accept bets on sports.
State senator John Bonacic (R-Catskills) told The Post he plans to introduce a bill next week to the entire Senate and then have it signed into law by the 20th of June at the time that the legislature goes on its summer break.
Bonacic’s bill provides for sports betting on mobile devices, and sports betting kiosks at the racinos located at Aqueduct as well as Yonkers racetracks. Although the racetracks of Aqueduct nor Yonkers have the capacity to operate sports books however, they are allowed to let four casinos manage sports books in their properties the bill states.
The executive director of Resorts World Catskills (one of the four casinos that are licensed), Charles Degliomini told The Post, “We are ready to go as soon as the regulatory environment is complete.”
Degliomini claimed that Resorts World can convert its large sports bar into a book about sports in 30-45 days.
His goal is to provide sports betting before the football season begins.
Degliomini added that he is close to deciding on an experienced sports bookmaking firm for the running of its sports book.
There aren’t any short-term plans for betting on sports in Connecticut.
In abolishing Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) The Supreme Court opens the door for any state to legally allow betting on sports.
Congress may still adopt legislation to ban betting on sports — however 电竞投注, it would probably be required to do it across the whole country not just Las Vegas, where it is legal for years. PASPA permitted sports betting in Nevadas as well as three other states.
The Monmouth Park racetrack, just an hour’s Uber ride away from Midtown the 300-seat book of sports promises to open in just two weeks, its owner Dennis Drazin told The Post.
New Jersey plans to craft the new law that will supersede the law of 2014, but Monmouth will not have to be patient.
Bonacic has said that he estimates New York will collect roughly $30 million in tax revenue from betting on sports. The former New Jersey State Senator Ray Lesniak states that his state can earn several hundred million per year from betting on sports.
Other states are also making rapid progress in passing legislation that has been written.
“You have a handful of states that could move immediately,” said Chris Grove, Managing Director at the Eilers & Krejcik Gaming research firm. “That includes Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, Oregon and Mississippi.”
“Another group of states would move very quickly,” He says, including Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan.
If betting on sports was legalized across all states, Grove estimated that there would be a total of $300 billion in annual wagers.
To put it in perspective, the money bet on casinos could be between four and five times more than the amount that is bet on betting on sports, Grove said.
However, not everyone believes that the legalization of sports gambling is a good news.
Certified gambling counselor Arnie Wexler who, for six years, was the head of an responsible gambling program in the Trump’s Atlantic City casinos, said that he believes that the number of gamblers will increase dramatically.
“Some people that would never place a bet with a bookmaker because it is illegal will now start betting.”
“The bottom line is this will be a real disaster,” Wexler declared.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her dissenting opinion, stated that she believed that the Supreme Court should have let certain parts of PASPA be preserved.
“The relevant question is whether the [US] legislature would have wanted unproblematic aspects of the legislation to survive or would want them to fall along with the infirmity.”
